New research from VicHealth shows that patrons drinking more water at licensed venues makes it a safer and more enjoyable work environment for staff.
In Victoria, all licensed premises are required by law to provide free drinking water to patrons.
In early 2017, VicHealth partnered with a hand full of Victorian licensed premises to conduct a trial to measure how often patrons use free drinking water and how to increase uptake.

The trial also uncovered that in general very few patrons currently drink water in licensed premises.
Licensees can encourage the uptake of free drinking water by making simple changes to how water is provided.
The study found that tactics such as having an attractive water dispenser and promoting free water throughout the premises can encourage patrons to drink more water.
